CharacteristicsOne of the main characteristics of the Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder is the chronic, severe and persistent irritability. This irritability is often shown by the child as temper tantrum, or temper outburst, and it occurs 3 or more times per week for one year or more. These temper outbursts are out of proportion, in intensity and duration. They occur in general in response to frustration. Even when the child is not having a temper, he is always irritable. As the DSM-5 Fact Sheet says, “Far beyond temper tantrums, DMDD is characterized by severe and recurrent temper outbursts that are grossly out of proportion in intensity or duration to the situation.”
