PrevalenceBecause this disease is relatively new, only recently have empirical studies been done to see the prevalence of this disease. One such study was done in 2013. The scientists looked at children from two to seventeen years old in three different communities. The study was conducted during a period of three months, and diagnoses were made using psychiatric interviews.
The study concluded that the prevalence of the disorder was between .8 % and 3.3%. This of course was after applying the duration criteria. The scientists also concluded that the greatest prevalence was found in early childhood, and that after early childhood the disorder was uncommon. They also found that those with the disorder often had other disorders such as oppositional defiant disorder and depressive disorders. Another earlier study in 2012, looked at 706 from ages six to twelve years old. This was a longitudinal study, embarking 2005 to 2008. This study concluded that about 26 % of the participants could qualify as having the disorder. It also concluded that it was difficult to separate this disorder from oppositional defiant disorder and other conduct disorders. These researchers concluded that the disruptive mood dysregulation disorder diagnosis had limited clinical use . However, the prevalence of this disorder seems to be under constant investigation and depends on both environmental and regional factors. Another study done in North Carolina, for example claimed a prevalence of 29%; much higher than the aforementioned studies. io Interestingly, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder also has a higher prevalence in males than in females. This is another contrast from bipolar disorder, which has an equal prevalence in males and females. |
