Evaluation and TreatmentResearch is still be made about how to evaluate and treat the disorder. Due to its newness and its association with other disorders treatment is still being developed. Psychotherapy has been proclaimed as one of
the best options for treating this disorder.
One of the preferred methods within this realm of treatment is behavior
modification. These are techniques that
the psychologist or psychiatrist uses to mitigate or change the behavior. These techniques are taught to the family and
hopefully the educators as well, so that the treatment is consistent in all
settings. Some suggest that the best treatment is behavior modification. This would include anger management. Many also say that it is important to treat the siblings and parents of the child in how to deal with this disorder . Furthermore, working with educators and the family in devising ways to cope with the outbursts instead of punishing the child after the outburst. Beneficial strategies may include providing a safe area where the child can let out the outburst and establishing a ¨safe person¨ in all environments where the child may be. This person is someone who the child should feel comfortable enough to inform when he or she feels they are about to have an outburst. Also researchers believe that observations of the child may reveal triggers that set off the outbursts, as well as elements in his or her diet that may contribute to outbursts. For example one simple prevention method at school may be giving more time for the child to complete assignments and tests, and thus eliminating some of the frustration associated with the event .
Other researchers state that medicine is another alternative. Anti-depressants, atypical antipsychotics, stimulants, and alpha-agonists show promise in helping with the disorder. However, because there is no empirical evidence, rather only anecdotal evidence one must use precaution when deciding to medicate. For example, some drugs such as lithium have already been shown not to work as a treatment option. |
